Protecting Yourself, And Your Personal Information, Online
In today’s technologically-immersed work and home environment – it is crucial that one knows how to protect themselves online, both in the workplace, and at home.
Online Awareness is Crucial
Extreme caution is paramount when sharing personal information online. Personal information may include your credit card and/or bank account numbers, photographs or other personal details. Be aware of, and cautious with whom you are sharing any information, as well as how specifically an individual or organization specifically intends to utilize or implement your information – and the legitimacy of the individual and/or the organization itself.
Choosing passwords and security questions and answers that are known only by you is also very important. Protect your personal information and privacy with strong(er) passwords, making certain that sites are secure whilst you visit them, and exercising caution if you share information via social media.
Keeping your software up to date is another key to protecting yourself online. A two-step authentication system is also a common approach to online information protection.
It is also important to be aware of online scams.
A scam is defined as: “Online and digital scams occur when fraudsters use the internet to trick people into revealing personal information or sending money. These scams often come in the form of phishing emails, fake websites, or fraudulent online shopping schemes.”
